The forty-fourth Annual General Meeting of The Romney Marsh Historic Churches Trust took place at the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, Newchurch, by kind permission of the Parochial Church Council on Saturday 16th May.

Around 80 members and friends of the Romney Marsh Historic Churches Trust gathered at Newchurch for this year's Annual General Meeting and Members' Lunch, enjoying an afternoon of fellowship, friendship and shared commitment to the future of our remarkable churches.

The event was a fitting celebration of the community that supports the Trust and the vital role our historic churches continue to play across Romney Marsh. Bringing together members from across the area and beyond, the occasion provided an opportunity not only to conduct the Trust's business but also to celebrate our shared heritage and the relationships that make our work possible.

A particular highlight of the day was an entertaining and enlightening talk from Sir Timothy Clifford, distinguished art historian and former Director of the National Galleries of Scotland. Drawing on his extensive experience in the art world, Sir Timothy offered fascinating insights into the acquisition, curation and stewardship of some of the world's most sought-after artistic treasures. He also shared stories from his career transforming gallery collections and exhibitions, giving members a unique glimpse behind the scenes of some of Britain's leading cultural institutions. His engaging presentation captivated the audience and provided a memorable conclusion to the formal proceedings.

During the AGM, members passed all resolutions proposed by the Council, including the important resolution for the Trust to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). This significant step will help strengthen the Trust's governance and support its future development. Our solicitors, Thomson Snell & Passmore LLP, will now submit the necessary documentation to the Charity Commission for approval and registration. As this process can take several months, members will be kept fully informed of progress.

The meeting also noted that membership fees for new members will increase from 1 January 2027. Existing members may wish to take this opportunity to extend their membership or consider taking out a Life Membership before the new rates come into effect. Members are also encouraged to recommend the Trust to friends and family who share an interest in preserving Romney Marsh's unique heritage.

Every membership directly supports the Trust's continuing work to maintain the buildings of the fourteen historic Romney Marsh churches and to promote understanding of their enduring significance to the Romney Marsh community today.

The Trust extends its sincere thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to such a successful and enjoyable day. The strong turnout and enthusiastic support demonstrated once again the deep affection and commitment that exists for these treasured churches and the communities they continue to serve.

Details of membership options, including Life Membership and membership fees from 1 January 2027 will be announced shortly and a link made available here.
