Across the Romney Marsh, our historic churches are brought to life by a wide range of events organised by local church teams and community groups. From talks and concerts to open days and seasonal celebrations, these events not only showcase the unique character of each church but many events also help raise vital funds for their care and preservation. The events featured on this page are not run by the Romney Marsh Historic Churches Trust, but we are delighted to share and support them.

Join the community at St. Augustine’s for a festive evening of carols around the Christmas tree, held inside the church.
Thursday 24 December, 4pm – Christmas Eve Crib Service
A special Christmas Eve service for families and children, celebrating the Christmas story.
Thursday 24 December, 11.30pm – Midnight Christmas Eve Service
Welcome Christmas with a traditional late-night service at St. Augustine’s.
Burmarsh, All Saints
Sunday 29 November, 6.30pm – Advent Liturgy and Carol Service
Join the congregation at All Saints’, Burmarsh, for a special Advent Liturgy and Carol Service on Advent Sunday.
This atmospheric, music-filled service will feature traditional Advent carols from the 1928 Oxford Book of Carols and the St Nicolas College, Chislehurst, Carol Book, alongside eight Advent hymns from the English Hymnal.
Incense will also be used during the service, creating an evocative setting for this traditional celebration of the beginning of Advent. A particularly special occasion for those who enjoy choral music and congregational singing.
Dymchurch, St. Peter and St. Paul’s

East Guldeford, St. Mary’s
Thursday 24 December, 4.30pm – Christmas Eve Candlelit Carol Service
St. Mary’s will once again hold its atmospheric Christmas Eve Candlelit Carol Service, offering a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Christmas in this historic marshland church.
Mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies will be served afterwards.
Visitors are asked to park at Salts Farm shop car park and walk to the end of the car park nearest the church, passing through the fence and continuing to the church entrance. Please bring a torch for the return journey and wear high-visibility clothing if available.

Fairfield, St. Thomas Becket
Sunday 6 December, 3.30pm – Candlelit Carol Service
One of Romney Marsh’s most atmospheric Christmas traditions returns to the isolated church of St Thomas Becket, Fairfield.
Surrounded by open marshland, this remarkable church has no electricity, and its annual carol service takes place entirely by candlelight. Visitors gather in its historic box pews to sing familiar carols in a wonderfully informal and welcoming atmosphere.
The service has become a much-loved seasonal tradition, attracting visitors from across the Marsh and further afield. Its special character is celebrated in a beautifully illustrated feature in the December/Christmas edition of LandScape magazine, entitled Welcoming Glow Among the Marshes.
Visitors are advised to dress warmly, wear suitable footwear for the marshland approach and bring a torch for the journey back after the service.

Sunday 20 December, 4pm – Bubble Church Dress-Up Nativity
A family-friendly celebration of the Christmas story, with a dress-up Nativity as part of Bubble Church.
Sunday 20 December, 6pm – Community Carol Service
Join the congregation and local community for a festive service of Christmas carols.
Thursday 24 December, 3.30pm – Bubble Church Dress-Up Angel Service
A special Christmas Eve Bubble Church service for families, featuring a dress-up Angel Service.

Celebrate Christmas Eve with a traditional Christingle service.
Thursday 24 December, 11.30pm – Midnight Mass
Welcome Christmas Day with Midnight Mass at All Saints’.
Friday 25 December, 10.30am – Christmas Day Holy Communion at St Peter’s, Greatstone
Please note that there will be no Christmas Day service at All Saints’, Lydd. A joint Holy Communion service will instead take place at St Peter’s, Greatstone, at 10.30am.
Newchurch, St. Peter and St. Paul’s
Sunday 8 November, 10.45am – Remembrance Service
A Remembrance Service will take place at the spinney by the Airfield Memorial, offering an opportunity for the community to come together in remembrance.
Saturday 5 December, 10.30am–12.30pm – Christmas Craft Fair, Coffee Morning and Christmas Tree Festival Opening
Celebrate the start of the festive season at St Peter and St Paul’s with a Christmas craft fair and coffee morning, alongside the opening day of the church’s Christmas Tree Festival.
Visitors can browse the craft stalls, enjoy refreshments and admire the decorated Christmas trees in the beautiful historic church.
The Christmas Tree Festival continues until Sunday 3 January 2027, with the church open until 5pm throughout December.
Thursday 24 December, 5pm – Family Carol Service
A child-friendly Christmas Eve carol service, welcoming families and visitors of all ages to celebrate Christmas together.
